About the Test

What is the COMPASS Test?

COMPASS is a pilot aptitude test taken by airlines for selecting candidates in Europe, UK, India and many other countries. This test is used to evaluate a candidate's ability to handle situations effectively in stressful scenarios. The candidate's cognitive, multitasking skills, coordination, English and personality are tested with this program.

The program consists of multiple programs.

The Programs

The COMPASS Tests

COMPASS Spatial Orientation test showing the RBI, Attitude and Heading instruments above a grid of airplane icons

Spatial Orientation

In the Spatial Orientation COMPASS test, you are given three instruments, namely the RBI indicator, Attitude indicator and the Heading indicator. Each question will show multiple airplanes and you will have to choose the airplane that corresponds to the indications on the displayed instruments. Performance is calculated based on the amount of correctly supplied answers.

COMPASS Personality Profile

The COMPASS Personality Profile tests the candidates on 15 personality competencies. The test is different from generic Big Five tests as it evaluates a candidate’s personality for an aviation environment. You get a personality profile that displays details on subjects like personal and relational competencies. The report also includes potential imbalances. Candidates get a conclusion and advice. You should be as truthful as you can during this assessment. The test expects you to submit responses that reflect your true personality. Fill in responses which you actually think you will give, not what you think the airlines expect from you. There is no right or wrong answer in this test.

Coordination Test

Candidates have to follow the flight director, keep the ball centered, and adjust the speed to the changing speed value. You may follow the flight director by using a keyboard or a joystick. Performance is calculated based on the correct inputs to the flight director.

COMPASS Short Term Memory test showing new data for Speed, Altitude, Radio and Heading with an answer keypad

Short Term Memory

In this test, the candidates have to memorize up to 4 supplied values containing Altitude, Speed, Heading and Radio frequency. They may be displayed in any given order. You need to assign the first letter of the value word at the end of the value in the input field. For example, if we want to input the speed as 340, we insert 340S in the input field. Performance is calculated based on the amount of correctly reproduced values the candidate enters inside the given time limit of the test.

COMPASS Slalom test showing an aircraft navigating between red boundary boxes with a wind indicator

Slalom

This test requires a joystick. You will be presented with an aircraft with the ability to only move horizontally. The aircraft keeps drifting due to wind and gusts of various speeds. Your task is to keep the aircraft within the red boxes’ boundary pattern.

COMPASS Task Manager test showing the autopilot panel and new information to enter, with a red alert button

Task Manager

The Task Manager COMPASS test evaluates your ability to manage two concurrent tasks quickly and accurately. In this test, you receive new information which you have to enter in autopilot settings. The secondary task is cancelling a red alert signal that will come on at irregular intervals. Every time you correctly update the autopilot or cancel an alert light in less than three seconds, you gain marks. Before the actual assessment, you will be given instructions and a short practice session.

COMPASS Complex Control Task showing an attitude indicator with pitch ladder, altitude tape and heading scale

Complex Control Task

In this COMPASS test, you will be using a control stick and rudder pedals along with up and down cursor keys on the keyboard. You will be given three scored rounds, each lasting two minutes. To excel in this assessment, PilotSphere recommends practicing Microsoft Flight Simulator or X-Plane.
